While only being on the Sixers starting squad since 2019 after being a first-round pick in the NBA draft, basketball star and dazzling photographer Matisse Thybulle has already become a fan-favorite and icon for the city of Philadelphia.
His hustle, passion for the game, and dauntless defense are some of the best we've seen in the past decade, and what other players should strive to achieve.
While he's not the best at getting Popeyes biscuits for the team in fulfilling his rookie duties, he has well lived up to his title as a charismatic, all-star player both on and off the court. I talked to Matisse about the Sixers season, his day-to-day schedule before game day, and much more:
James: How did you get started playing basketball?
Matisse: My parents put me on a team when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade because I was really tall. I didn't like basketball until I grew older. I played because all my friends were playing the sport and I wanted to be around them.
James: How would you describe the dynamic between you and your teammates on the court?
Matisse: We have good chemistry that translates from the locker room onto the basketball court. We are excited about each other's success.
James: How would you describe the Sixers season so far?
Matisse: The season for me has been a learning process. I'm constantly taking everything in, listening and working on adjustments.
As a team, I think we're having a successful season so far - things are clicking and we're playing well.
James: What's your favorite aspect of the game?
Matisse: The camaraderie and chemistry that five guys work together on both ends - offense, and defense to reach a goal.
James: What's the highlight of your career so far and why?
Matisse: Having a meaningful role on a good team as a rookie because it is very fulfilling to me.
James: What advice has a coach given you that you will always remember?
Matisse: It's hard to pinpoint the best advice from just one coach. But the best advice I'll always remember is to never get too high or too low - always stay consistent.
James: You are down by two points with 10 seconds left, what's your go-to move?
Matisse: I'd do a step-back jumper for sure.
James: Walk us through a typical day in your day-to-day life.
Matisse: To start my day off, I eat a hearty breakfast, followed by practice and answering the media. Then I eat a quick lunch, take a nap, and call my family and friends. To end the day, I eat dinner and fulfill any team or partner commitments. Sometimes, I play video games. On a day off, I like to explore Philly and take photographs.
James: What's one thing you wish people knew about you?
Matisse: That I'm just a normal person like everyone else, except a little weirder!
James: What have you learned this year as a player and a person?
Matisse: I'm experiencing real adulthood for the first time, and learning to be on my own. I'm learning each day to be a professional and am embracing being a role model.
