With a fuse of fiery light, smoke machines, and mystifying music came the introduction for the most anticipated performance of the year. Playing over thirty songs with a blend of old, new, and everything in between, the Backstreet Boys put on a star-studded performance with unbelievable vocals, dazzling dance moves, and a wide variety of pyrotechnics and enormous energy throughout the entire show.
With the sold-out female-dominant crowd erupting in loud cheers and tears, the monstrous green screen was slowly lifted up. Nick, AJ, Howie, Brian, and Kevin appeared in matching red and gray cloaks, singing the pre-chorus from "Everybody": " Let's get on with the show, turn the lights down low." Brian said: "Are you ready to party tonight Philly?" and the crowd went ecstatic.
With a smooth, flowing transition, the Backstreet Boys started their set with their signature songs "I Wanna Be With You", "The Call", and "Don't Want you Back".
All of a sudden, Nick, AJ, Howie, and Kevin faded away in the fog toward the back of the platform, leaving Brian at the front of the stage. "You all look beautiful tonight," Brian said, pointing to every section at the Wells Fargo Center to have the spotlight on them to wave and cheer to Brian. "The reason why you all came out tonight is the reason the Backstreet Boys still exist."
Brian then immediately began to burst into the beautiful solo "Nobody Else" from the BSB's newly released album DNA, debuting number one on the US Billboard 200. Emerging from the platform of the stage with an outfit change appeared AJ, Nick, Howie, and Kevin, performing "New Love", "Get Down", and their smash hit "Show me the Meaning of Being Lonely".
About halfway through the show, the Backstreet Boys took a short break to ease their vocals for part two of their performance. With cardboard dividers emerging from the platform of the stage, the boys reminisced with the audience about how they started and talked about their first gig in Philadelphia, bringing back nostalgia for the die-hard BSB fans in the crowd. The boys then began to strip down in their underwear with the cardboard boxes giving us a limited view. Brian joked that the crowd in the upper level had the best seats because they were able to get the best view of the "action". They then threw their undershirts into the audience and they went bezerk.
There were so many unforgettable moments from the show but the most unbelievable had to be the emotional finale. After performing "I want that way", and floating to the bottom of the stage waving to the crowd, the audience was heartbroken that the show was over.
Repping Sixers jerseys, the crowd was elated to see that the Backstreet Boys were back to perform "don't break my heart", and "larger than life". With fireworks blasting off and confetti filling the Wells Fargo Center, AJ said "God bless you guys. Until we meet again."
The DNA tour wasn't just a concert. It was a nostalgic roller coaster, a giant party of Backstreet Boys fans old and new together for a glorious end to summer, still evoking great chemistry between the guys all those years. In the words of Prince, we all partied like it was 1999, the same year that the Backstreet Boy's essential album Millenium was released.
There was pure magic the entire night featuring beautiful harmonic appacella performances, storytelling, and memories of that evening that will last a lifetime. Don't miss out on the opportunity to see the Backstreet Boy's DNA tour when they make a stop to your city.
